Listening to God through Spiritual Direction
Because we are surrounded by the loving presence of God, Spiritual Direction is a spiritual companionship where a person (director) lovingly listens alongside another person (directee) to God's activity in their lives. A Spiritual Director offers a space of soul hospitality for another person to relax and enjoy God. This involves paying attention to God and opening up to God's loving direction discovered in all areas of a person's life. Spiritual Direction often involves simple conversation, questions, listening, laughter, quiet moments, verbal and non-verbal prayer, reflecting on life experiences, exploring longing, and discovering desire. Ultimately it is God who is the spiritual director, drawing people into a greater awareness of love and identity, through unique invitations within everyday life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been walking beside others in their relationship with God. I have had other people through the years who have influenced me through their own loving posture of compassionate listening toward me. God has shaped me with the gift of being a husband of over 25 years, and a father of two adult children. My own lived experience with God in the everydayness of life, while being particular and unique to me, is the place from which I authentically listen to other people’s story. I have had the opportunity to be a pastor in local churches for over 25 years, which has offered space for me to journey with a variety of diverse people in various seasons of life. I have personally been in some form of formal spiritual direction since 2006. I have been trained as a Spiritual Director and Spiritual Direction Supervisor. I am also trained to accompany people who are making the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola, through the Jesuit Institute South Africa. I personally made the Spiritual Exercises in retreat in January 2017. I lead retreats around topics such as prayer, journaling, Scripture mediation, silence and solitude.
My Education includes a Bachelor of Biblical Studies (Ozark Christian College: Joplin, Missouri), a Master of Divinity - Spiritual Theology (Regent College: Vancouver, Canada) and a Doctor of Ministry - Spiritual Direction (Fuller Theological Seminary: Pasadena, California).
Spiritual Direction is a spiritual companionship, where one person listens to another person, as they both listen to God's loving activity in their lives. I offer Spiritual Direction in person, through Zoom video, and over the phone.
Spiritual Direction Supervision is an intentional relationship where spiritual directors create space for further reflection, development, and consultation. It is important for every healthy spiritual director to be in some form of supervision with at least one other spiritual director. I offer supervision both individually and in groups settings.
Akouō life retreats are adaptable retreats that focus on images of God through spiritual practices. Prayer, Meditation, Silence and Solitude, Journaling, and Rest are just a few of the practices that are focused upon to help people become more open to the love and activity of God.
The Ignatian Spiritual Exercises originally introduced by Ignatius of Loyola, were initially done over a 30-day long individual retreat. Throughout the retreat, a person primarily focuses upon the life of Jesus and practices that help open oneself up to God in a more holistic way. The retreat has often been adapted for most people into their daily lives, to be expanded over a longer period of time.
